What is an HbA1c test?

HbA1c stands for Haemoglobin A1c, which is a blood test that measures the average level of blood sugar (glucose) over the past 2-3 months. The test is a reflection of recent long-term sugar (glucose) levels in your blood and can help in monitoring diabetes.

  • This diabetes test can be performed at home and sent to the lab for analysis. Report will show your value of HbA1c. Reference ranges of HbA1c normal range will also be given (in both % and mmol/mol).
  • If you are diabetic, this test is useful for monitoring and managing your blood sugar levels. The "normal" ranges of the HbA1c test are very broad, hence, it is usually used for monitoring blood sugar level control in diabetics.
  • The A1C test is a blood test that does not require fasting.
  • The HbA1c capillary blood collection kit contains everything you need to collect blood and send it to our laboratory for analysis. Inside, you'll find lancets, instructions, lab request form, labels, tube, tube pouch, prepaid UN3373 envelope, tube holder, swabs, alcohol wipes, and plasters. No need to go to the post office; simply drop off your sample in the nearest red letterbox.

What do HbA1c Results Mean?

Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) results can be expressed in two different units: percentage (%) and millimoles per mole (mmol/mol). Both units provide information about average blood glucose levels over the past 2-3 months. Here's how you can interpret and explain HbA1c results to a patient in both units:

  1. Percentage (%):

    • Normal Range: Below 6%
    • Pre-diabetes Range: 6% to 6.4%
    • Diabetes Range: 6.5% and above

    Explanation:

    • If the result is below 6%, it suggests that blood sugar levels have been well-controlled over the past few months.
    • If the result is between 6% and 6.4%, it indicates pre-diabetes, meaning there is an increased risk.
    • If the result is 6.5% or higher on two separate tests, your GP would use this test as a starting point to look into diabetic status.
  2. Millimoles per Mole (mmol/mol):

    • Normal Range: Below 42mmol/mol
    • Pre-diabetes Range: 42 to 47 mmol/mol
    • Diabetes Range: 48 mmol/mol and above

    Explanation:

    • If the result is below 42 mmol/mol, it suggests good blood sugar control.
    • If the result is between 42 and 47 mmol/mol, it indicates pre-diabetes.
    • If the result is 48 mmol/mol or higher on two separate tests, it is diagnostic of diabetes.
